William Cockburn Obituary

COCKBURN, William Gordon “Bill”

William Gordon “Bill” Cockburn passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, January 16, 2026, at Lennox & Addington County General Hospital, with his devoted wife Marlene by his side, in his 83rd year.

Bill bravely faced an incurable illness for several years, and most recently endured seven months of intensive medical care while hospitalized. He was born on May 10, 1943, in Calgary, Alberta, to the late Jack and Euphemia Cockburn. Due to his father’s service in the Air Force, Bill enjoyed a childhood spent in Calgary, Montreal, and Ottawa—experiences that helped shape his lifelong curiosity and love of history.

Bill will be deeply and forever missed by his beloved wife Marlene, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. He was a cherished father to Melinda McLean (Scott) and Kenneth Cockburn, and was predeceased by his son Michael in 1982 at the age of 13.

Bill dedicated his professional life to the Federal Government, where he was employed from 1965 until his retirement in 2000. In his quieter moments, he found great enjoyment in reading, especially past history, and watching classic films. He and Marlene also shared a passion for travel and took great pride in showing their English Setters throughout Canada and the United States.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Milestone Cremation Services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Marlene extends her heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Lennox & Addington County General Hospital, Kingston Health Sciences Centre—including the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit—and Providence Care Hospital Dementia Ward. She also sincerely thanks the Kingston Alzheimer’s Support Group for their kindness, respect, and support. Marlene is deeply appreciative of the many friends who checked in on her, especially during these past several challenging months.

If desired, memorial donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Diabetes Association. Online condolences, photos, and memories may be shared at www.milestonecremation.ca.
