It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Howard Kitchen at the Hastings Manor in Belleville, Ontario on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at the age of 91.
Howard was recently reunited with his beloved wife Athelia Maude Kitchen in the long-term care of Hastings Manor. They both transitioned from their home in Belleville. November 22nd marked their wedding anniversary of 57 years.
Howard was the second youngest of eight children in a warm and loving family growing up in Picton, Prince Edward County. He is survived by his older brother Morley (Carol) and predeceased by sisters Gwen and Berniece “Kitty,” brothers Ronald, Russell, Jack, Joe and parents George and Elizabeth.
Many nieces and nephews knew well Uncle Howard’s jovial laugh, curious nature and enduring loyalty to his family. He revered family gatherings and enjoyed time spent sharing tales of his youthful adventures. He enjoyed recalling younger days of skiing, snowmobiling or baseball while golfing with his nephew. He will be remembered for his love shared with his wife Athelia right up to his last moments, his admiration and pride for his daughter Paula Uszynski and son Douglas Zubot, and his appreciation and respect for his sister-in-law Sharen Kitchen.
Based out of Ottawa for much of his working life, Howard worked for the Government of Canada in progressive roles with the Employment Insurance Benefits Program. He learned French as an adult for the job and enjoyed talking about the politics of the day with whomever was interested. Notably his career in public service began in northern Canada 200km from the Arctic Circle supporting the men at one of the stations on the Distant Early Warning Line (DEWLine) in 1957-58.
An animal lover, he was never far from the colourful display of nature in his backyard and always had a purring pet within reach. He spent countless hours in his drive shed restoring an antique sleigh or polishing his beloved yellow 1929 Model A Ford. For many seasons he enjoyed touring events with other antique car club members in the Ottawa Valley.
Family members are grateful for the care and kindness of the staff at the Hastings Manor in Belleville. Cremation has taken place. As per the family’s wishes, a private family Graveside Service will be held at the Cherry Valley Cemetery in the summer (2026). If desired, in memory of Howard Kitchen donations can be made to the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward. https://www.humanesocietyhpe.ca/in-memory-donations
