Terence "Terry" Wright Obituary

Terence “Terry” Leslie Wright passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, in Belleville, Ontario, with his beloved wife by his side and the music he loved playing softly in the background.

Born on March 16, 1946, in East York, Ontario, Terry was the son of Kathleen and Albert Leslie “Joe” Wright. He grew up in Toronto, the third of four children, in a lively family that shaped his warmth, humour and lifelong appreciation for connection. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joanne (née Logan); his sister, Hazel Wright; his brothers, Tony and Peter; and many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Terry’s love of music began early at North Toronto Collegiate Institute where he joined the school band and played trombone. Jazz and big band music captured his imagination and that passion never left him. He went on to study music at the University of Toronto and later formed a band – Root Sixteen Quartet – with close friends. Whether improvising with a vocal ditty or tickling the ivories as the “Piano Man of Quinte Gardens,” Terry found joy in music throughout his life and shared that joy generously with others.

A tragic automobile accident in 1967 brought an unexpected turn, ending his professional music path and leaving him with lasting challenges. Yet Terry met life with resilience, humour and grace – continuing to embrace the things he loved – especially music, storytelling, the company of others and travel including a special trip where he met royalty and heads of state in several countries.

In 1982, Terry met the love of his life, Joanne, at Belleville’s White Cane Club. From that moment on, they were inseparable – building a partnership defined by devotion, laughter and deep mutual care. As they often joked, Terry became Joanne’s “eyes,” with the small bit of vision he retained, while Joanne was his “short-term memory” – a perfect balance that truly felt like a match made in heaven. Terry adored Joanne wholeheartedly and that love was returned in equal measure. Together, they shared many happy adventures, including cruises and exotic travels.

At home or away, Terry delighted in life’s simple pleasures: a good John Wayne film, a Detective novel, military aviation history, a well-made piña colada, and above all, time spent with family and friends. Terry was quick with a compliment, generous with his laughter and always ready with a cheeky joke. His sense of humour and kind spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Terry passed as he lived – surrounded by love, with music in the air.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate teams at Kingston General Hospital and Belleville General Hospital for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Terry’s memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Kingston General Hospital or Belleville General Hospital.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at a later date.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
