Joyce (O’Rourke) Thompson

Bittersweet is the news of the peaceful death on April 6th 2024, of Joyce Gladys Thompson (O’Rourke), formerly of Belleville. Joyce was born in Montreal, the daughter of Matilda Jackson and John Patrick O’Rourke, sister to Irene (Lavender). With her late husband, Ken Wilson Thompson, they raised their daughters Kerri (John Cowden) and Tracy (Richard Moukperian) in Belleville. Joyce was the Aunt to Susan, Murray (Lena), Gordon (Diane), Sandra, Donna (Bob) and Alden (Connie). Joyce was an active volunteer with Quinte Figure Skating Club, Nortel Pioneers, and Meals on Wheels. She loved working at Sears and was part of the Eastern Star for many years. Her career before children was with Bell Canada where she was the first female supervisor in the company’s history. Joyce was a devoted grandmother to Jake who even as Alzheimer’s claimed so much of her memory, she fondly reacted to his voice and stories of his racing. She will be remembered for her quick smile, sharp mind and memory, facility with numbers, eagerness to volunteer, shopping stamina, enthusiastic listener, and dedicated friend. She inspired her grandson to begin a fundraising campaign for Alzheimer’s programming, awareness building, and research.  Jake’s dedication to his fundraising has become even stronger in memory of his precious grandmother.
