Passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre at the age of 86. A loving and devoted husband of Mary for 62 years. Joe will also be dearly missed by his children Tina (Rod), Patty (Paul); his grandchildren Tara (Jamie) and Andrew; his cherished friend Durelle; and many more who were part of his life over the years. Joe is predeceased by his loving sister Ramona Bartkus (2012), and infant twin bother Stanley (1936).
Joe was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba and as a child his family moved to southwestern Ontario where his father farmed tobacco. Joe met Mary at Tillsonburg High School and the couple relocated to Northumberland County where they spent some of their most gratifying years growing tobacco.
After retiring from the farm, he moved to Belleville and pursued his passion for cars, working as a car salesman and eventually opening his own successful used car business. Joe loved to keep busy. For several years he worked as a dedicated volunteer, driving patients to Kingston for medical treatments. He enjoyed playing golf, and at home embraced his new-found interest in cooking. Family and friends will fondly remember Joe’s command of the BBQ and table. He took great pride in his home, and in keeping up with what was clearly the best maintained lawn in town.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a Funeral Mass that will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 399 Victoria Avenue, Belleville, on Saturday, October 1st at 12:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the parish hall to celebrate a life well lived.
An interment of ashes ceremony will take place at a later date at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Tillsonburg, Ontario.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
