Jean Louise Matilda House
April 16, 1943-March 3, 2025
Jean passed March 3, 2025 at West Lake Terrace and, true to form, had endeared herself to all the staff and residents she came in contact with there.
Jean was born in Brampton, Ontario and raised on a dairy farm in
nearby Churchville. The family farm raised Jersey cows, some of whom were chosen to be "Elsie" at the Royal Winter Fair. She worked the farm from a young age, and when her father broke his leg, at age 18 she took over running the farm, prompting the local newspaper to feature her in an article, calling her "Powerhouse." She also had a love of music and played clarinet in the Streetsville High School band; she was accomplished at playing the organ.
Jean continued to work the farm with her father and later her brother Henry. A strong sense of community and volunteer engagement was instilled by her father, and Jean continued in that path. She was a long-time 4-H leader and sat on the Ontario 4-H Council. She was president of the Brampton Fair for many years, up until 1987. In 1982 she was presented a Civic Award from the City of Brampton for outstanding long-term contribution in the service of her community.
In 1988, Jean and her brother Henry relocated to Brighton and ran a Jersey dairy farm until the late 90's. Jean then operated Eddystone Kennels for over 20 years. She had a strong love for animals and was well loved in return by the dogs in her care. She was an active member of the Retriever Club, and later joined the Rebekahs. She sat on Brighton Applefest Committee for a number of years and organized the dog demonstrations. Jean was very social and loved to talk, making many friends along the way.
To her family, she was known as "Jeannie." She was a devoted and proud Aunt to Justin and Jamie.
Jean is predeceased by her parents - Richard Henry House and Jean Margaret House, and her beloved nephew Justin Matthew Powell House. She is survived by her brother Henry, sister-in-law Sharon (Powell) and her beloved niece Jamie (House).
Donations to your local Humane Society or chosen animal welfare cause are appreciated. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. There will be a private interment at Churchville Cemetery.
