Born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Bev was the daughter of the late Hilton and Annie Smith of West Brook, Nova Scotia. A graduate of Mount Allison University (B.A., B. Ed.), she taught in Halifax before joining the staff of Breadner Elementary School, RCAF Station Trenton, in 1966. It was there that she met and married her husband of 59 years, Gary, and gave birth to their two sons, Chris, of Kimberley, BC and Brian, of Kingston, ON.
Air Force moves took the family to Greenwood, NS, Kington, ON and back to Trenton where she resided since 1979.
An avid traveller since her university days, Bev visited over 100 countries and enjoyed numerous river and ocean cruises, including one to Antarctica. Since her retirement in 1996, she was an active member in the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario group. She was also an enthusiastic member of the Canadian Forces Protestant Women’s Chapel Guild for over 56 years, an ardent Bridge player and an avid reader.
Bev’s greatest love and enthusiasm was directed at her grandson Max, and granddaughters Ryan and Charlie, all of Kingston, ON and now in their 20’s. In their early years, she would “borrow” them from Brian and Lisa each summer to spoil them for a week or more with planned activities such as visits to Canada’s Wonderland, water parks, museums, the Toronto Zoo, a horse farm and the Peterborough lift locks.
Bev, who courageously battled pancreatic cancer for almost two years, is survived by her older brother Wilson (Patsy), of West Brook, NS, and her younger sister Kathy, of Enfield, NS, as well as brothers-in-law Wilson, of Hillsburgh, ON and Dick of Sydney, BC and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. She was pre-deceased by younger brother Keith in 2000.
The family thanks Dr. Chooback and staff of the BGH cancer clinic, as well as the staff and volunteers of Hospice Quinte for their kind and loving care of Beverly.
In accordance with Bev’s wishes, she has been cremated and her ashes will be deposited in the family’s columbarium in St. George’s Cemetery, Trenton, during a family service in April.
Should you wish to make a donation in Bev’s memory, you could consider giving to the Canadian Cancer Society.
